NBA President Commits To Enhanced Collaboration With FIDA Nigeria On Gender Justice And Child Protection

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to advancing gender justice and child protection during a courtesy visit by the newly elected executive members of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria. The meeting took place on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at the NBA House in Abuja.

Leading the FIDA delegation was the Country Vice President, Eliana Martins, FICMC, who was accompanied by other members of the newly inaugurated executive. Mazi Osigwe congratulated the leadership team on their appointment and lauded the contributions of the outgoing executives. He also celebrated the ascension of EZINWA NWANYIEZE OKOROAFOR, a former Country Vice President of FIDA Nigeria, to the position of International President, describing it as a recognition of FIDA Nigeria’s influence on the global legal stage.

During the meeting, FIDA Nigeria’s leadership highlighted their ongoing efforts to address gender-based violence, promote gender parity within the legal profession, and protect the rights of children across Nigeria. They pledged to continue these initiatives with renewed vigor, emphasizing collaboration with key stakeholders, including the NBA.

In his response, Mazi Osigwe reaffirmed the NBA’s dedication to supporting FIDA Nigeria’s mission. He stressed the importance of tackling issues such as gender-based violence, discrimination, and child rights violations, which remain critical to creating an equitable society.

“The NBA is fully committed to working alongside FIDA Nigeria to address these pressing societal challenges. Together, we can foster a more inclusive legal profession and ensure a safer environment for women and children,” Osigwe stated.

Also present at the meeting was Chief Emeka Obegolu, SAN, Chairman of the NBA 2025 Annual General Conference Planning Committee. Chief Obegolu assured FIDA Nigeria of an opportunity to showcase their impactful work at the upcoming NBA Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt. He urged FIDA members to seize the opportunity by taking advantage of early bird registration for the event.

The NBA President commended FIDA Nigeria for their relentless advocacy in advancing justice and equality. He pledged continued collaboration between the two organizations to drive impactful initiatives that promote gender justice, child protection, and a more equitable legal system.

The meeting reinforced the shared commitment of both organizations to championing critical social justice issues and fostering meaningful change within Nigeria’s legal and societal framework.
