Tinubu Approves Ban On Homosexuality, Other Activities In Nigeria’s Military
President Bola Tinubu has approved new regulations barring Nigerian military personnel from engaging in homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, cross-dressing, and other behaviors considered contrary to military ethics.
The directive, outlined in Section 26 of the revised Harmonised Armed Forces Terms and Conditions of Service, was signed by the president on December 16, 2024.
The document specifies that personnel must not:
Engage in homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, or activities associated with the LGBTQIA2S+ community, including cross-dressing.
Have body piercings or tattoos.
Exhibit disorderly behavior, brawling, or drunkenness, whether on or off duty.
Engage in amorous relationships with subordinates or the spouses of fellow service members.
The document further prohibits membership in secret societies, participation in political party activities, and private business ventures by military personnel.
Military personnel are mandated to:
Fulfill all financial obligations, such as vehicle licensing and insurance, in a timely manner.
Avoid issuing dud cheques or misusing government property for personal gain.
Reject gifts or favors from junior-ranking officers or subordinates.
According to the document, cultural or traditional religious societies that are transparent in their membership and conduct are excluded from the ban on secret societies.
While the revised document outlines extensive rules for military conduct, it does not specify punishments or disciplinary measures for personnel who violate these regulations.
The approval of these measures marks a significant update to military ethics and operational guidelines, reinforcing discipline and upholding the values of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
