NBA Condemns Police Brutality Against Legal Practitioners

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has strongly condemned the recurring incidents of police brutality against legal practitioners, describing such actions as an assault on the entire legal profession.

Speaking on Tuesday during a meeting with the NBA National Litigation Committee at the NBA House in Abuja, Osigwe reaffirmed the association’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of lawyers across the country.

“The incessant brutality of legal practitioners by the Nigerian police is unacceptable and constitutes a direct attack on the legal profession,” Osigwe stated.

The meeting highlighted the NBA’s dedication to promoting justice, accountability, and respect for the rule of law in Nigeria while ensuring a safe environment for legal practitioners to carry out their duties.

Osigwe also provided updates on legal action initiated by the NBA at the Federal High Court against the Nigerian Police on behalf of Mr. Ernest Chukwuemeka Okpaga, a legal practitioner who was unlawfully detained and assaulted by officers at the National Cyber Crime Centre in Abuja.

The NBA president assured the committee of the association’s unwavering resolve to seek justice for Mr. Okpaga and others who have faced similar injustices.

The NBA’s ongoing efforts demonstrate its commitment to safeguarding the rights of legal practitioners and reinforcing the importance of accountability within law enforcement agencies.
