The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has conferred an honorary Doctor of Laws degree (Honoris Causa) on the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the advancement of quality education in the state.
Governor Mbah received the prestigious honor during the university’s 53rd convocation ceremony over the weekend, where he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming the education sector to equip future generations for global competitiveness.
“This recognition reflects the values driving our achievements over the past 18 months. Education remains the best legacy to leave for the younger generation. With this honor, we are inspired to redouble our efforts to put Enugu State on a trajectory of growth and development,” Mbah stated.
Highlighting his administration’s dedication, Mbah noted that one-third of the state’s budget has been allocated to education in two consecutive budget cycles. He expressed gratitude to the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Polycarp Chigbu, and the university’s leadership for the award, pledging continued support to enhance the institution’s capacity to achieve its mission.
In his convocation address, Prof. Chigbu revealed that 11,143 students, including over 1,000 postgraduates, graduated during the ceremony. He also announced the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees on two other distinguished individuals and the recognition of two Emeritus Professors.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor highlighted the institution’s achievements under his leadership, including its top ranking in the SCOPUS database for scholarly output among Nigerian universities, with over 7,025 publications from 5,813 authors. Other successes included advancements in infrastructure, strengthened alumni relations, and innovative solutions to the university’s energy crisis.
Prof. Chigbu urged the graduating students to embody the university’s values as they embark on their future endeavors.
“Be the leading lights wherever you go, and let your actions reflect our mission to ‘Restore the Dignity of Man,’” he charged.
Dr. Peter Mbah’s recognition underscores his administration’s focus on education as a cornerstone for Enugu State’s development and the broader mission of advancing Nigeria’s educational landscape.
