Female Lawyers Demand Swift Justice For Victims Of Ibadan Funfair Tragedy
The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has called for a prompt investigation and the swift delivery of justice for the victims and survivors of Wednesday’s tragic stampede at a funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a statement issued on Friday, Ademubowale Adelabu, chairperson of FIDA Oyo, directed the appeal to Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration. The stampede, which occurred at the Islamic High School, Bashorun, claimed 35 lives, leaving several others injured.
The funfair, reportedly organised by Naomi Silekunola (former wife of the Ooni of Ife) in collaboration with Agidigbo Radio Station, turned fatal when a stampede ensued, leading to chaos and loss of life. Six individuals remain in critical condition following the tragedy.
FIDA expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasising the need for accountability and justice.
“It is extremely sad that 35 children have been confirmed dead, while six others are under critical conditions,” the statement read.
The organization reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of women and children in the society.
“FIDA Oyo State is the voice of the voiceless and the fighter for the promotion, protection, and preservation of the rights and welfare of women and children. We stand resolute and in solidarity with every child whose dreams and aspirations were cut short due to the stampede,” the statement continued.
FIDA also urged authorities to take urgent measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future while ensuring that justice is served for the victims and their families.
The lawyers called on the government to ensure a thorough investigation, noting the commitment of the police to oversee and investigate the tragic incident.
The Ibadan funfair tragedy has sparked widespread grief and calls for accountability, with FIDA leading the charge for justice and better safety measures at public events.
