Nigerian Man Arrested In India For Alleged Marriage Scam And Fraud
The Rajnandgaon police in Chhattisgarh, India, have arrested a Nigerian national, identified as Johnson, in connection with a marriage scam. According to reports by ETV Bharat, the 40-year-old suspect allegedly created a fake profile on a matrimonial website to woo a local woman and defrauded her of ₹15.72 lakh after promising to marry her.
Police investigations revealed that Johnson, who had been living secretly in Delhi with an expired visa and passport, posed as a UK-based businessman planning to relocate his business to India. Through an associate, he contacted the victim, claiming he was detained at Delhi airport and required money to exchange UK currency.
Rahul Dev Sharma, Additional Superintendent of Police at Rajnandgaon police station, stated that Johnson, along with an accomplice, blackmailed and cheated the woman. The victim grew suspicious when the suspect’s phone was switched off after she transferred the money, prompting her to file a fraud complaint with the Dongargarh Police Cyber Cell.
“Our investigation, assisted by the cyber cell, traced the accused to Delhi. He was arrested during a raid at his residence,” said Sharma. He added that Johnson has a history of scamming multiple women and that authorities are seeking more details during interrogation.
Police recovered a laptop, four mobile phones, and froze the suspect’s bank account as part of the investigation.
