Afam Okeke, Esq. Advocates For Unity And Action On International Human Rights Day
Afamefuna O. Okeke, Esq., Immediate Past Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Abuja, has called for collective efforts to safeguard human rights as the world commemorates International Human Rights Day 2024.
In a statement, Okeke emphasised the need to celebrate progress made in human rights advocacy while acknowledging the work that remains. Quoting Eleanor Roosevelt, he noted, “The destiny of Human Rights is in the hands of all of our citizens in all of our communities.”
He reiterated this call at the International Human Rights Day 2024 event, hosted by the NBA- Human Rights Committee earlier today while delivering a Goodwill Message on behalf of the NBA branches in FCT (Abuja, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Garki and Nyanya/Karu)
Okeke urged individuals and communities to unite in protecting the rights of all people, ensuring equal justice, opportunity, and dignity for everyone, regardless of background or status.
Okeke also paid tribute to human rights defenders globally, referring to them as “men and women of courage” who tirelessly work to secure the rights of others.
“As we mark this day, I am certain that together we can make the world free from all forms of human rights abuse and discrimination,” he stated, expressing optimism about a more equitable future.
International Human Rights Day, observed annually on December 10, commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 and serves as a reminder of the universal struggle for justice, freedom, and equality.
