Rhodes-Vivour Hints At 2027 Lagos Governorship Bid, Criticizes Sanwo-Olu’s Spending

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s 2023 Lagos State governorship candidate, has signaled his intention to contest again in 2027. In a recent interview on Iyabo Ojo TV, published on Sunday, Rhodes-Vivour said he is learning from past mistakes and building a stronger political movement to remain a visible force in opposition politics.

Reflecting on his campaign strategy, he criticized the trend where opposition voices go silent after elections, vowing to maintain an active presence this time.

“By God’s grace, we are working. We gained a lot of traction, we also saw our mistakes, we saw the loopholes we made, and we’re working on that,” Rhodes-Vivour said. “The biggest mistake in Lagos politics is that the opposition goes quiet after elections. That is not happening this time.”

Rhodes-Vivour accused Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration of extravagant spending amid widespread economic hardship in Lagos. He alleged misuse of public funds, citing examples such as the payment of personal legal bills, ₦200 million spent on unspecified projects, and ₦2 billion allocated for items like fans and consultants for bus networks.

“With the level of suffering that Nigerians and Lagosians are dealing with, we need to have accountability and transparency,” Rhodes-Vivour said. “Our government must use public money in the most efficient way possible, and that is the work of the opposition.”

The Labour Party candidate also highlighted ongoing efforts to connect with Lagosians through health outreach programs and micro-health insurance plans. These initiatives provide free treatment worth up to ₦6,000 and aim to address healthcare accessibility across the state.

“We’re in people’s faces. We’re doing our best with health outreaches and taking micro-health insurance plans across the state,” he added.

As Rhodes-Vivour positions himself for a potential 2027 run, his focus on staying active in opposition politics and advocating for transparency signals a continued challenge to the status quo in Lagos governance.
