Governor Makinde Swears In 10 Judges, Reaffirms Commitment To Judicial Excellence

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Thursday presided over the swearing-in of eight High Court judges and two Customary Court of Appeal judges. The ceremony, held at the Executive Council Chamber, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, marked a significant step in bolstering the judiciary’s capacity to uphold justice and the rule of law.

The governor urged the new judges to execute their duties with integrity, responsibility, and impartiality, emphasizing their critical role in advancing the state’s Roadmap for Sustainable Development 2023–2027. He assured continuous support from his administration to provide the judiciary with the necessary infrastructure and resources.

Governor Makinde highlighted that the appointments were merit-based, devoid of executive interference, and in line with constitutional provisions. He praised the collaborative relationship among the three arms of government in Oyo State, which he credited for delivering dividends of democracy since 2019.

“This swearing-in is a testament to our commitment to strengthening the judiciary. The rule of law is pivotal to creating a state of law-abiding citizens and sustainable development,” Makinde stated.

He also reiterated the administration’s focus on law enforcement and modernization, including the use of CCTV cameras and traffic management technologies, to foster a disciplined society.

The Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Iyabo Yerima, lauded Governor Makinde’s unprecedented support for the judiciary, noting that his administration has appointed 15 judges — the highest by any administration in the state’s history.

Yerima highlighted significant investments in the judiciary, including:

• Provision of 38 vehicles, with 10 assigned to the newly sworn-in judges.
• Construction and renovation of High Court complexes in Egbeda, Ona Ara, Iyaganku, Ring Road, and Ogbomoso.
• Submission of a bill to increase the number of judges in the state.

Justice Yerima urged the newly sworn-in judges to remain steadfast, honest, and firm in their duties, especially as the judiciary grapples with increasing caseloads.
