U.S. Representative Nancy Mace Proposes Bill To Restrict Restroom Use Based On Biological Sex

Nancy Mace, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, has introduced a resolution aimed at restricting transgender lawmakers and House employees from using facilities that do not align with their biological sex.

During an interview on Tuesday, November 19, Mace stated the proposal was a direct response to the election of Sarah McBride, who will become the first openly transgender member of Congress.

“Yes, and absolutely, and then some. I’m absolutely 100% gonna stand in the way of any man who wants to be in a women’s restroom, in our locker rooms, in our changing rooms. I will be there fighting you every step of the way,” she asserted.

Mace indicated her intent to incorporate the resolution into the House rules package for the upcoming Congress.

McBride, 46, was elected in Delaware during the November 5 general elections and is set to be sworn in on January 3. In response to the controversy, McBride shared a message of hope for mutual respect among lawmakers.

“Every day, Americans go to work with people who have life journeys different than their own and engage with them respectfully. I hope members of Congress can muster that same kindness,” McBride wrote on social media Monday night.

House Speaker Mike Johnson addressed the issue, noting that the Republican leadership is working on solutions to accommodate McBride while fostering respect for all members.

“We welcome all new members with open arms who are duly elected representatives of the people,” Johnson said. “I believe it’s a command we treat all persons with dignity and respect. This is an issue that Congress has never had to address before. We’re going to do that in a deliberate fashion with member consensus on it, and we will accommodate the needs of every single person.”
