Kano Lawmaker Faces Backlash Over Viral Video Displaying Stacks Of Cash

Aliyu Sani Madaki, a member of the House of Representatives from Kano State, is facing widespread criticism after a video emerged online showing him with large stacks of cash in his living room. Madaki, who represents the Dala Federal Constituency under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), was captured sorting wads of N1,000 notes alongside two unidentified individuals in the footage, which has since gone viral.

The video has sparked outrage among Nigerians, who condemned the display as insensitive and out of touch with the country’s economic struggles. Many took to social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), to voice their discontent, highlighting the stark contrast between Madaki’s wealth and the hardships faced by the average citizen.

Amid ongoing cash scarcity in the nation, social media user Pure Stanley questioned how Madaki obtained such a substantial sum. “Almost all the banks in Nigeria are not dispensing more than N20-50k to their customers, yet Aliyu Madaki has over N50-80 million in cash at his house. How?! Which bank dispensed the money to him? And what does he want to use the money for? These are the kinds of people occupying our wheels of power and steadily impoverishing this country,” Stanley wrote.

Another commentator, Engr Y G, expressed alarm over the situation, stating, “It’s alarming to see politicians like Aliyu Sani Madaki in office, raising questions about accountability and transparency. This image of him surrounded by cash is sparking outrage, wondering how he intends to account for these funds.”

A user identified as Allpower belongstoGod added, “I swear these people are the reason we don’t see cash anyhow again. Just imagine, and poverty in that region is extremely high oo.”

BABBA AGK doubted the lawmaker’s intentions, remarking, “I don’t believe Aliyu Sani Madaki can say this huge amount of money is for constituency projects.”
