Kano Judicial Service Commission Enforces Disciplinary Actions Against Eight Judiciary Staff

The Kano State Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has taken disciplinary measures against eight judiciary employees, as announced by Baba Jibo Ibrahim, spokesperson for the Kano State Judiciary, on Sunday.

The statement detailed that the Judiciary Public Complaint Committee (JPCC) investigated two complaints against Magistrate Nasir Ado. The investigation found Ado had conducted a court proceeding without record, later falsifying and altering records to suggest otherwise. The JSC, following the JPCC’s recommendations, deemed Ado’s actions as gross misconduct and subsequently recalled him from judicial duties.

The statement also reported that Sharia court judge Yusuf Kawu faced disciplinary action after a complaint from the Association of Fighting Criminals alleged he had released a convict who had been sentenced to a 12-month term by another judge. The commission ruled Kawu’s actions unlawful and recalled him indefinitely from judicial functions.

Magistrate Sanusi Usman Atana received a strong warning following two petitions. He was found to have improperly taken on recovery of premises in a criminal case and, in another instance, granted bail prematurely without notifying the prosecution. The commission cautioned Atana to stay within his jurisdictional boundaries and uphold principles of fair hearing.

Finance Registrar of Kiru Sharia Court, Salisu Adamu Nayola, was compulsorily retired after JPCC investigations substantiated bribery allegations. Nayola admitted to soliciting bribes from the families of deceased individuals for inheritance processing, often in coordination with Judge Abdulmuminu Nuhu. While Nayola was retired, Nuhu was recalled from judicial duties for two years under supervision.

Alkali Abubakar Abdullahi of the Sharia Court in Takai was warned after an investigation revealed he had presided over an estate distribution outside his jurisdiction. The JSC reminded Abdullahi to respect his jurisdictional limits.

The commission also suspended court messenger Shuaibu Bello for four months without pay after an investigation found he had overcharged a court user and displayed disrespectful behavior, even deceiving the petitioner into signing a withdrawal letter.

Finally, Shamsu Abbas, a court registrar, was directed to compulsory retirement after investigations showed he overstepped his role by granting bail and ordering restitution in an unassigned case.

The JSC emphasized its commitment to upholding judicial integrity, warning that appropriate sanctions will continue to be applied to maintain public confidence in Kano’s judicial system.
