Lawyer Sues APC House Of Reps Member Adamu Saba Over N72 Million In Unpaid Legal Fees
A member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Ahmed Adamu Saba, representing Edu/Moro/Patigi Federal Constituency in Kwara State, has been taken to court by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, A.S. Jawondo, over alleged unpaid legal fees amounting to N72 million.
According to court filings obtained from the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin, Jawondo alleges that Saba, elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC), engaged him for legal representation in a pre-election case but failed to pay the full agreed fees. The lawyer claimed he provided legal services that spanned from the Federal High Court to the Supreme Court, with total charges amounting to N81,295,000. However, Saba reportedly paid only N5,700,000 initially and later added N1,000,000 in December 2023, leaving a balance of N72,250,000 unpaid.
Jawondo detailed that despite repeated requests and reminders, Saba did not make further payments. The court document stated: “Despite demands and warnings, the defendant refused, failed, and neglected to settle his indebtedness to me, except for a payment of N1,000,000 on December 5, 2023, leaving an outstanding balance of N72,250,000.”
The lawyer emphasized that Saba’s actions indicated a lack of interest in clearing his debt after utilizing Jawondo’s legal expertise. Consequently, Jawondo is seeking the court’s judgment to award him N81,090,000, which includes the unpaid fees, incidental expenses, VAT, and damages. He is also requesting 10% interest on the total sum from the judgment date until full payment.
The matter was heard on Wednesday and has been adjourned to December 10, 2024.
