House Of Representatives Advances Bill To Launch Armed Forces Farms And Ranches Scheme
A bill proposing the establishment of an armed forces farms and ranches scheme has passed its second reading in Nigeria’s House of Representatives. Sponsored by Lagos lawmaker Babajimi Benson, the bill aims to bolster food security and contribute to economic diversification.
During Tuesday’s debate, Benson explained that the proposed scheme would leverage the armed forces’ resources and capabilities to boost agricultural production. He noted that diversifying the economy and reducing reliance on oil revenue is key to addressing food insecurity.
Benson highlighted that while military farms already operate in various forms, this bill would formalize them under a comprehensive legal framework. The initiative would utilize the arable land already owned by the armed forces, eliminating the need for new land acquisition.
The scheme is expected to work with government ministries and agencies to implement integrated farming systems, supporting both crop and livestock production. Benson added that the initiative would increase agricultural productivity, help stabilize food prices, reduce food imports, create jobs, and address unemployment.
The bill received strong support in the House, passing a voice vote led by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.
