Gombe Assembly Passes Bill To Establish Disability Commission
The Gombe State House of Assembly has approved a landmark bill to establish a Disability Commission, marking a significant step toward safeguarding the rights of people with disabilities (PWDs) and promoting inclusivity across the state.
Sponsored by lawmaker Shuaibu Haruna, the bill seeks to ensure equal opportunities and enable full participation of PWDs in society. Its passage follows the adoption of a report from the House Committee on Women Affairs, Social Development, Special Duties, and Inter-Governmental Affairs, which was presented at the Committee of the Whole.
Committee Chairman Gabriel Galadima Fushison, representing Kaltungo West, highlighted that the bill was originally a private member’s initiative, which was then carefully refined to address the unique needs of the state. The committee held a public hearing that gathered input from key stakeholders, including the attorney-general, the commissioner for justice, the police, civil society organizations, and professional groups such as the Nigerian Bar Association, International Federation of Women Lawyers, and the Nigerian Union of Journalists.
These consultations led to amendments in 23 sections of the bill, enhancing its provisions to reflect the input of diverse voices.
Lawmaker Shuaibu Haruna expressed his dedication to fostering an inclusive society, stating, “This bill is a step toward creating a society where PWDs can actively participate in governance and access equal opportunities, including the right to vote and be voted for.”
The new commission, once fully operational, is expected to play a vital role in advocating for the rights of PWDs and ensuring they have the support needed to thrive in Gombe State.
