FCT Police Arrest Nigerian Lawmaker for Assaulting Bolt Driver in Viral Incident
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, for allegedly assaulting a Bolt driver in Abuja. Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed Ikwechegh is currently at Maitama Police Station for questioning.
The incident reportedly unfolded on Sunday when Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya was dispatched by a snail vendor to deliver an order to the lawmaker’s residence. Tensions escalated when Abuwatseya requested payment upon arrival, prompting a heated exchange, partially captured in a viral video. The footage shows the visibly upset lawmaker slapping Abuwatseya twice and threatening further physical action.
In the recording, Ikwechegh is heard berating the driver, declaring, “I can make this man disappear in the whole of Nigeria and nothing will happen.” The lawmaker then told Abuwatseya, “You will not get a penny from me with this level of disrespect. You will suffer, I will deal with you.”
The video shows Abuwatseya calmly questioning the slaps, to which Ikwechegh retorted, “I just did, slap me back. How dare you?”
In response to the recording, Ikwechegh appeared unfazed, instructing Abuwatseya to “Call the Inspector General of Police,” adding, “Let him come.”
The FCT Command expressed concern over Ikwechegh’s dismissive attitude toward the Inspector General of Police, calling it a “troubling disregard for law enforcement authority.” Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu has ordered a thorough investigation to ensure accountability.
Public outrage quickly spread on social media, where many demanded justice for Abuwatseya. No official statement has yet been made by Ikwechegh or the House of Representatives.
The Nigerian incident mirrors a recent controversy in the UK, where British MP Mike Amesbury was suspended by the Labour Party pending investigation after footage allegedly showed him attacking another man. The FCT Police Command has reassured Nigerians of an impartial investigation, with legal action promised upon its conclusion.
