2024/2025 Legal Year: Governor Eno Announces New Correctional Facility In Uyo And Exclusive Estate For AKS Judges
Plans are underway for the construction of a new correctional facility in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, with the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, expected to lead the groundbreaking ceremony soon. Additionally, a new estate exclusively for judges in the state is set to be developed.
Governor Umo Eno made these announcements during a service at Qua Iboe Church, Nwaniba Road, Uyo, marking the opening of the 2024/2025 legal year in Akwa Ibom. He also disclosed the appointment of Mr. Julius Ezugwu, the immediate past Comptroller of the Nigerian Correctional Service, as a consultant for the correctional facility project.
“I want to thank Mr. Julius Ezugwu for his service and offer him a post as a consultant to oversee the completion of the new correctional center, a project he initially started,” the governor said.
Governor Eno emphasized that the relocation of the Uyo Correctional Facility fulfills a promise made to the Nigerian Correctional Service officers. The current facility, plagued by poor conditions and erosion, was deemed unsuitable, prompting the decision to relocate.
“In a few days, the Honourable Minister for Interior will be here for the groundbreaking ceremony of the new correctional center. The facility will provide training and trade skills to inmates, helping to reform them for reentry into society,” he added.
In addition to the correctional facility, the governor announced plans for a new estate dedicated to serving judges, after adjustments were made to the initial Emily Estate, which also accommodates senior public servants. Governor Eno expressed his desire to return to the original plan of creating an exclusive estate for judges.
The governor also praised the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaette F. Obot, for her effective leadership in the judiciary and efforts to reduce the backlog of criminal cases. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting the judiciary in delivering speedy justice to help decongest correctional facilities.
“Thank you for your understanding and partnership in all you do. I recognize the reforms you have initiated, and I assure you that the state government will continue to collaborate with the judiciary to maintain peace and justice in Akwa Ibom,” the governor stated.
Justice Obot, in her remarks, thanked the governor for his contributions to the judiciary’s growth and expressed optimism for the success of the 2024/2025 legal year. She described the event as an opportunity to appreciate God’s grace and highlighted the judiciary’s dedication to upholding justice.
During the service, the General Superintendent of Qua Iboe Church, Rev. Ekpedeme Moffat Efanga, delivered a homily titled “Divine Remembrance,” urging legal practitioners to use their positions for the good of humanity.
The event also featured the presentation of awards, including the Judiciary Award of Excellence and Outstanding Performance to Governor Eno, and awards for Innovative and Impactful Service to Elder Effiong Essien, Head of Civil Service, and Mr. Julius Ezugwu. Prayers were offered for the integrity of the courts and the nation, as well as for the new legal year.
