Retired Justice Ariwoola A Pride Of Oyo State — Governor Makinde
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has praised retired Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, as a man of integrity and a source of pride for the state, acknowledging his distinguished and unblemished service to the judiciary.
Governor Makinde, represented by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, made these remarks during a special retirement prayer and thanksgiving celebration held on Saturday in Iseyin, Oyo State, in honour of the former CJN.
Speaking at the event, the governor lauded Justice Ariwoola’s ascent through the ranks of the judiciary, from the High Court to the Court of Appeal and eventually to the Supreme Court, where he served as Chief Justice. He described the milestone as a testament to Ariwoola’s integrity and commendable character.
“Justice Ariwoola’s rise to become the Chief Justice of Nigeria is a remarkable achievement that reflects his dedication and integrity. He has made Oyo State proud, being the first from the state to attain the position of CJN. His retirement is not just a personal achievement, but a celebration for the entire state,” said Makinde.
The governor also noted that Ariwoola’s exemplary performance was evident by the presence of numerous Supreme Court Justices who attended the retirement ceremony to honour him.
Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the current Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chair of the occasion, praised Ariwoola for his leadership and positive contributions to the judiciary. She commended his unwavering dedication to upholding justice during his tenure.
The National Missioner of the Istjabah group, Ashiru Kolawole, in his sermon, urged Justice Ariwoola to remain grateful for his successful and unblemished career, encouraging him to draw closer to Allah and remain steadfast in his religious obligations.
Justice Ariwoola, who was born on August 22, 1954, was appointed as the 22nd Chief Justice of Nigeria on June 27, 2022, and formally confirmed by the Senate on September 21, 2022. He retired on August 22, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.
The retirement celebration was attended by Justices of the Supreme and Appeal Courts, Oyo State Chief Judge Iyabo Yerima, legal professionals, state cabinet members, industry leaders, traditional rulers, religious figures, and friends and family.
