Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello Surrenders To EFCC Amid Corruption Allegations
On Wednesday, September 18, former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello voluntarily turned himself in to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following allegations of fraud and corrupt enrichment during his tenure.
A statement issued by Ohiare Michael, Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office, explained that the former governor made the decision to surrender after consulting with his family, legal team, and political allies.
The statement emphasized Bello’s respect for the rule of law, noting that he had consistently sought to enforce his fundamental rights to ensure due process. It highlighted that his legal team had represented him in court hearings regarding the case, and that Bello was now ready to face the EFCC to clear his name.
The former governor expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and its anti-corruption efforts, stressing that during his time in office, he implemented measures to fight graft in Kogi State.
Bello, who was accompanied to the EFCC headquarters by prominent figures, urged the agency to act professionally and respect his rights as a Nigerian citizen. Further details of his engagement with EFCC operatives are expected to be disclosed soon.
Bello is currently facing a 19-count charge from the EFCC, including allegations of money laundering involving N80 billion. Despite the charges, he has previously refused to attend EFCC interrogations and has evaded court proceedings.
