Husband Expresses Love As Wife Returns ₦100,000 Dowry For Divorce
A 25-year-old woman, Zainab Musa, returned her ₦100,000 dowry to her husband, Musa Sani, in exchange for a divorce at Rigasa Shari’a Court, Kaduna, on Wednesday. The couple’s two-year marriage was dissolved after Zainab requested Khul’i, an Islamic ruling that allows a woman to seek a divorce by returning her dowry.
Efforts by both families to reconcile the couple were unsuccessful, according to neutral counsel M.S Aliyu. He confirmed that the parents had agreed on the return of the dowry and added, “Zainab’s parents will accept whatever amount the defendant can afford as upkeep for their child.”
Despite professing his love for Zainab, Musa Sani accepted her decision, acknowledging that she no longer wished to continue the marriage. He also accepted the return of the ₦100,000 dowry.
Presiding Judge Malam Mukhtar Aliyu confirmed the dissolution of the marriage through Khul’i and instructed Zainab to observe her Iddah, a waiting period following divorce, which lasts for three menstrual cycles to ensure clarity on paternity if a child is born.
The judge noted that any dissatisfied party could appeal the decision within 30 days.
