Efua Ghartey Elected As First Female President Of The Ghana Bar Association
Legal practitioner Efua Ghartey has made history by being elected as the first female President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA). The election took place at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) during the GBA’s annual conference.
Efua Ghartey won with 1,208 votes, defeating Kwadzo Dzakpasu, who garnered 1,060 votes. Her election marks a significant milestone in the GBA’s history, which has been led exclusively by male presidents since its inception.
This victory follows two close defeats in previous attempts to lead the association, where she lost to Tony Forson and Yaw Boafo by narrow margins of 67 and 65 votes, respectively.
Efua Ghartey, who co-founded Ghartey & Ghartey in 1994 with Joe Ghartey, brings over 20 years of legal experience to her new role. She previously served as the Chair of the Greater Accra Branch of the GBA, further cementing her leadership within the legal community.
In her acceptance speech, Efua Ghartey expressed her gratitude for the historic election and pledged to protect the legal profession. She emphasized her commitment to promoting the rule of law and advancing justice in Ghana.
“I am humbled and honored to be the first female President of the Ghana Bar Association,” she said. “This indeed is something new that the bar, for the first time, has entrusted leadership to the ladies. We shall make sure that you never regret this choice.”
Her election has been hailed as a breakthrough for women in Ghana’s legal profession, recognizing her hard work and dedication over the years.
The outgoing GBA President, Yaw Boafo, congratulated Ghartey on her win, stating that the association is “proud to have Efua Ghartey as its first female President” and looks forward to working with her.
Efua Ghartey’s inauguration is set to take place on Monday, November 4, 2024.
