AWLA Conference Highlights Call For Advancing Women And Children’s Rights

At the African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) 2024 annual conference held in Lagos, the need for legal professionals to leverage their tools to advance and protect the rights of women and children was emphasised. AWLA President Mrs. Caroline Ibharuneafe made the call during the conference, which was themed “Digital Advocacy: Leveraging Technology for Inclusion.”

Ibharuneafe underscored the significance of ensuring that every woman and child has access to their entitlements and protections, regardless of their background. “We have the capacity to foster a digitally inclusive environment. Together, we can build a more equitable future for women and children,” she stated.

Mrs. Bibian Aloba, chairperson of the conference committee, urged AWLA members to engage with the Gen Z and Alpha Generation, who are well-versed in artificial intelligence. She highlighted the importance of integrating human and AI capabilities to bridge generational divides, saying, “We can collaborate to harness and explore the transformative power of technology for a more inclusive and equitable society where nobody is excluded.”

Keynote speaker Mrs. Edna Agusto, founder of ReadManna Empowerment Initiative, spoke on the importance of adopting essential ICT skills for professional growth. Her address, “Empowering Professionals to Effectively Utilize Affordable Technology to Navigate the Complexities of Today’s Business Landscape,” focused on the need for skills in legal research, document management, artificial intelligence basics, and cybersecurity.

Agusto emphasized that mastering these skills is vital for enhancing efficiency, improving client service, and keeping up with industry trends. “These skills help us stay organized, manage our time well, make informed decisions, and boost financial rewards,” she concluded.
