Osinbajo And Peter Obi Join Nigerian Leaders At Democratic National Convention In Chicago
Former Nigerian Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi are among the prominent Nigerian political figures currently attending the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. They are special guests of the National Democratic Institute (NDI), a Washington DC-based non-profit organization dedicated to promoting democratic values worldwide.
Alongside Osinbajo and Obi, former Senate President Ken Nnamani was also invited to the event, as reported by the NDI. The Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, was also invited, although it is unclear if he attended.
Osinbajo’s presence at the convention highlights his growing global engagement and international political profile since leaving office in May 2023. The participation of these distinguished Nigerians at the convention underscores the importance of fostering global democratic values and the significant role African leaders play in shaping the future of democracy both on the continent and globally.
The Democratic National Convention is a key event in the U.S. political calendar, where the Democratic Party discusses key policies, strategies, and formally nominates its presidential candidate, along with the current U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris. The event provides an opportunity for global leaders to observe and engage in discussions that could influence global political trends.
Founded in 1983, the NDI has been at the forefront of supporting and strengthening democratic institutions worldwide. Operating in over 50 countries, the organization is dedicated to fostering free and fair elections, advocating for human rights, and upholding democratic norms. By attending the convention, Osinbajo and other Nigerian leaders will engage with global democratic practices, exchange ideas with international counterparts, and bring valuable insights back to Nigeria.
Their involvement in such international political events reflects Nigeria’s active role in the global democratic community.
