Bauchi Police Arrest 62-Year-Old Man For Producing Fake Naira Notes
The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 62-year-old man, Tahir Ahmed, on charges of producing counterfeit naira notes. The arrest was announced on Tuesday in a press release by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Ahmed Wakil.
According to Wakil, the incident began on August 6, 2024, when a concerned citizen from Jos North LGA, Plateau State, boarded a commercial vehicle from Sabon Garin Narabi in Toro LGA, Bauchi State, en route to Bauchi. During the journey, the vehicle stopped at Tilden Fulani Market in Toro LGA, where Tahir Ahmed joined the ride.
While in transit, Ahmed allegedly performed ritualistic chants that appeared to transform papers into what seemed to be new one-thousand-naira notes, raising suspicions that the currency might be counterfeit.
Upon reaching Yandoka Road in Bauchi metropolitan, a Good Samaritan reported the incident to the police. Following a series of interrogations, Ahmed reportedly confessed to the crime. The police recovered a total of N238,000 in suspected counterfeit notes from him.
Wakil added that investigations are ongoing to uncover more details related to the case. The Bauchi State Police Commissioner, Auwal Muhammad, has instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department to send a request to the Central Bank of Nigeria for forensic analysis to determine the authenticity of the suspected currency notes.
