NBA Ado-Ekiti Branch Launches Discounted Food Market For Members

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ado-Ekiti Branch has introduced a special market offering foodstuffs and essential items at discounted prices to its members. The initiative, known as the “Lawyers Market,” took place on Saturday morning at the Afe Babalola Bar Centre, located within the premises of the Ekiti State High Court in Ado-Ekiti.

Running from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM, the market saw a large turnout of lawyers eager to purchase various staple food items at significantly reduced prices. Available goods included garri, rice, beans, vegetable oil, spaghetti, Semovita, and other essentials, all sold at half their usual market prices.

For example, a measure of garri, typically priced at N1,200, was sold for N500, while a measure of rice worth N3,000 was available for N1,500. Similarly, a litre of vegetable oil, usually sold for N2,400, was offered at N1,200, and a measure of beans valued at N3,000 was sold for N1,500. Other items, such as 1KG of Semovita, crates of eggs, and packs of spaghetti, were also available at steep discounts.

The market was organized and managed by key members of the branch’s leadership team, including Welfare Secretary Mrs. Khadeejah Adeniyi, Social Secretary Emmanuella Akinyemi, and Financial Secretary Uzoma Aremu-Adetayo, who oversaw payments.

NBA Ado-Ekiti Branch Chairman, Taiwo Omidoyin, explained that the initiative was designed to help members cope with the rising cost of living. He highlighted that the food market provided a 50% discount on essential items, offering financial relief during a time of persistent economic challenges.

“We are aware of the current hardship in the country and its impact on everyone, including our members,” Omidoyin said. “This initiative was conceived to help mitigate the harsh economic situation in our own little way. Although we may not be able to do much, the branch purchased food items from the markets and sold them to financial members at a subsidized price of 50% off public market rates.”

He also noted that there was a limit to the quantity of items members could purchase, and the market was exclusively open to financial members of the branch.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Bolanle Ojo, expressed her appreciation for the initiative, noting that the 50% discounts would help ease the burden of the ongoing economic hardship.
