Russia Denies Involvement In Nigerian Protests Featuring Its Flag
The Russian government has officially distanced itself from the ongoing #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests, where some demonstrators have been seen waving Russian flags.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Russian Embassy in Nigeria clarified that neither the Russian government nor its officials are connected to these activities.
“We have observed reports in Nigerian media and circulating videos and images showing protesters in northern Nigeria carrying Russian flags and chanting slogans in support of President Vladimir Putin,” the statement said.
“The Government of the Russian Federation and its officials are not involved in these activities and do not coordinate them in any way.”
The Russian Embassy reiterated Russia’s policy of non-interference in the domestic affairs of foreign countries, including Nigeria. “The decision by some protesters to wave Russian flags is a personal choice and does not reflect any official stance or policy of the Russian Government.”
The statement also expressed respect for Nigerian democracy, acknowledging the right to peaceful demonstrations under Nigerian law as a democratic expression. “However, if these events lead to disruptions or acts of violence, we strictly condemn them,” the statement concluded.
