Police Release Tear Gas On Some Protesters In Abuja

Police officers deployed tear gas against a group of protesters near the federal secretariat in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, earlier today.

The protest, driven by young Nigerians, marks the start of a nationwide demonstration against economic hardship and rising inflation, branded as ’10 Days of Rage’ with the hashtag #EndBadGovernance.

There is a substantial police presence across the country as the protests gain momentum.

On Wednesday, a federal capital territory (FCT) high court restricted the demonstrations to the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja. The order was issued by Justice Sylvanus Oriji following an ex parte motion filed by Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister. The motion listed Omoyele Sowore, Damilare Adenola, Adama Ukpabi, Tosin Harsogba, and persons unknown as the defendants.

Despite the court order, some protesters on Thursday morning confronted police officers, insisting they would not be confined to the stadium’s vicinity.

This ongoing situation reveals the tension between authorities and citizens advocating for better governance and economic reforms.
