Tinubu Names National Arts Theatre After Wole Soyinka

President Bola Tinubu has renamed the National Arts Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos, in honor of Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, marking his 90th birthday on July 13.

In a letter celebrating the renowned playwright, Tinubu also announced the renaming of the Arterial Road N20, stretching from Northern Parkway to Outer Northern Expressway in Abuja, to Professor Wole Soyinka Highway.

This decision follows a recommendation from the Federal Capital Territory Administration, led by Minister Nyesom Wike.

Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, shared the news on Tuesday via his X account. Onanuga stated that Tinubu recognized Soyinka’s significant contributions to literature and his role in enhancing Nigeria’s cultural reputation globally.

The President emphasized that the tribute acknowledges Soyinka’s dedication to human rights and social justice, stating, “Professor Wole Soyinka has brought immense honour and fame to Nigeria through his unparalleled contributions to literature and his unwavering commitment to human rights and social justice. Naming this highway after him is a fitting tribute to a man who has dedicated his life to the pursuit of truth, freedom, and artistic excellence.”
