Afam Osigwe, SAN, Condemns Police Brutality Against NBA-YLF Idemili Secretary, Calls For Swift Investigation

Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has condemned the recent assault on Mr. Isong Eugene, the Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association Young Lawyers Forum (NBA-YLF) Idemili Branch, by a policeman attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Awka. Describing the attack as heinous and unwarranted, Osigwe emphasized that such acts of violence against legal practitioners are serious violations of human rights and affronts to the rule of law.
“Mr. Isong’s dedication to upholding justice and serving the legal community should be met with respect and protection, not violence and intimidation,” Osigwe stated. He stressed that the actions of the involved officer not only inflicted physical harm but also undermined the foundations of the legal system, which is built on fairness, integrity, and respect for the law.
Osigwe has called for an immediate, transparent, and thorough investigation into the incident, insisting that the responsible officer be held accountable through appropriate disciplinary and legal measures. This assault, he noted, underscores the urgent need for comprehensive police reform to prevent such incidents and restore public confidence in law enforcement agencies.
Expressing solidarity with Mr. Isong and all legal practitioners who face threats and violence in their line of duty, Osigwe urged relevant authorities to take decisive action to ensure the safety and security of citizens, especially legal professionals who play a critical role in the administration of justice.
“Justice for Mr. Eugene Isong is imperative,” Osigwe asserted, reaffirming his commitment to protecting the rights of all individuals against unlawful and unjust actions. He emphasized that such acts of brutality must not be tolerated, and that he will continue to advocate for a legal system where the rule of law prevails and the rights of all citizens are respected and upheld.
