Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has announced the approval of the construction of 40 houses for Justices of the Court of Appeal, the Federal High Court, and the FCT High Court. This project has been sanctioned by President Bola Tinubu and is part of a broader effort to improve the judiciary’s infrastructure and overall sector.
Wike made this announcement during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Abuja Division of the Appeal Court Complex. He emphasized the need for a transformed judiciary to enhance its functionality and effectiveness. He also revealed that the President has approved retirement homes for court heads, with construction starting in August and keys expected to be handed over by September next year.
In addition, Wike inaugurated the first Taxi and Bus terminal in Kugbo, Karu District of Abuja, addressing the challenges faced by commuters, especially during the rainy season, and aiming to improve public transportation infrastructure.
Chief Justice Olukayode Ariwoola highlighted the importance of caring for the judiciary to ensure justice. He praised the support the judiciary has received under the current “Renewed Hope Agenda” and called for similar attention to be given to members of the Supreme Court.
Attorney-General Prince Lateef Fagbemi expressed concerns about the judiciary becoming increasingly inaccessible to the common man and emphasized that the new housing complex should be a place where truth and people’s rights are upheld.
Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, President of the Court of Appeal, commended the FCT minister for fulfilling his promises and stated that the new complex would aid in the smoother dispensation of justice in Nigeria.
