NBA Sokoto 2024 Law Week: State Govt Renews Commitment To Rule Of Law
The Sokoto State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to collaborating with the Judiciary to uphold the rule of law within the state. This commitment was reiterated by the State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Muhammad Nasir Binji, during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Law Week of the Nigerian Bar Association, Sokoto branch, themed “Professionalism and Nation Building” in Sokoto State.
Binji emphasized that Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration has taken significant strides to fulfill this commitment by fostering an enabling environment for cooperation between the Executive and the Legislature.
“Under Governor Aliyu’s leadership, efforts are being made to enhance the welfare of legal practitioners in the state. The government is also committed to providing them with the necessary tools and conducive working conditions,” he stated.
The Sokoto State Chief Judge, Muhammad Sai’du Sifawa, commended the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Sokoto branch for organizing the Law Week event. He emphasized that such gatherings provide an opportunity for legal professionals to interact, exchange ideas, and enhance the administration of justice.
Justice Sifawa urged members of the association to reflect on past achievements and strategize for the advancement of the legal profession. He also lauded the state government for its non-interference in the operations of the judiciary, which ensures its independence.
Barrister Muhammad Nuhu, the NBA Chairman Sokoto State Branch, described the Law Week as a pivotal platform for fostering discourse and knowledge-sharing among legal practitioners. He emphasized the theme’s relevance, highlighting the crucial role of lawyers in nation-building.
“The theme, ‘Professionalism and Nation Building’, underscores the ethical conduct expected of lawyers and its direct contribution to a stronger and more just Nigeria,” Nuhu remarked.
Acknowledging the state Chief Judge’s efforts in enhancing the judicial system, Nuhu praised the infrastructural developments and appointments made to improve access to justice in Sokoto State.
The event’s highlight was a presentation on “Professional Discipline as Panacea to Nation Building in Nigeria” by the keynote speaker, Professor Abubakar Matazu, Dean Faculty of Law, Usmanu Danfodiyo University.
