Sports Lawyer, Faithfulness Okom Helps 15-year-old Basketball Prodigy Secure Three US Scholarships
Faithfulness Okom, a 26-year-old lawyer and co-founder of a fintech startup, recounts his upbringing in Calabar, Cross River State, where his parents, Prof Michael Okom, a Bishop, former Dean of the Faculty of Law and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UNICAL and his mum, an evangelist who runs an interdenominational fellowship who instilled in him a love for education and compassion for others. Okom’s childhood was marked by a household that welcomed and supported numerous individuals in need, fostering an environment of kindness and generosity.
Although Okom excelled in debating during his undergraduate years at the University of Calabar, his interest in basketball was sparked in 2020. He became determined to help young athletes like David Etim, a young boy whom he encountered one day in Calabar.
Etim, a towering teenager, caught Okom’s attention, leading to a conversation that revealed Etim’s passion for basketball and the challenges he faced. Despite initial resistance from Etim’s father, Okom extended his support, eventually welcoming Etim into his home.
Through the guidance of basketball coach, Frank John and the assistance of Prince John Owhe from the OCAS foundation, Etim’s talent was recognized, earning him an invitation to the NBA Africa Academy showcase in Senegal. With financial aid from Okom and his friend Kennedy Ekezie, Etim participated in the tryouts, impressing scouts and coaches and securing three scholarships from US colleges.
Reflecting on Etim’s journey from the streets of Calabar to the brink of a basketball career in the US, Okom expresses fulfillment and pride. He plans to establish Inspire Naija, an initiative to connect young athletes with opportunities in foreign sports markets, leveraging his expertise in sports law and his network in Europe.
Despite relocating to Spain for his master’s degree in Sports Law, Okom remains committed to supporting athletes like Etim and empowering youth through sports. His story underscores the transformative power of mentorship and highlights the potential for sports to change lives.
