Yahaya Bello Clears Air On Alleged $720,000 Children’s School Fees Advance Payment, Says No Amount of Blackmail Will Make Him “Come Through Backdoor”

Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has refuted allegations of using $720,000 from the state’s coffers to cover his children’s tuition fees. The chairperson of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Olanipekun Olukoyede, accused Bello of misappropriating these funds as his tenure ended, purportedly to pay for his children’s education at the American International School, Abuja.

Reports surfaced indicating that the American International School Abuja had offered to reimburse the $720,000 payment made by Bello for his children’s tuition fees. A letter from the school, circulating online, disclosed that the former governor had made the payment in August 2021, in advance for future school terms his children had yet to attend. This letter formed part of the EFCC’s evidence supporting the N80 billion money laundering charges brought against Bello after his departure from office in January.

However, Bello, who concluded his term as governor on January 27, vehemently denied using state funds for his children’s education at the American International School Abuja. A statement from Bello’s media office on Friday clarified that his children had been enrolled in the school before he assumed office in 2016.

The statement asserted that when the EFCC attempted to unlawfully retrieve the funds paid by Bello and other family members, a member of the family challenged the EFCC’s actions. Additionally, the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja restrained the school from returning the funds to the EFCC.

The statement emphasized, “His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello did not pay the sum of USD720,000 as alleged by the EFCC Chairman or USD840,000 as is being bandied about on the internet.”
