Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, has emphasized the judiciary’s role in consistently delivering justice during the National Summit on Justice. He highlighted that for many Nigerians, justice remains an elusive reality.
Ariwoola urged judicial officers to scrutinize the legal framework and advocate for legislative reforms while embracing technological advancements to combat issues like corruption, inefficiency, and undue influence within the judiciary.
Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, echoed Ariwoola’s sentiments. Fagbemi stressed the importance of collaboration in shaping and implementing national justice policies. He noted that the summit, conceived in 2017, provides a crucial platform for analyzing and tackling challenges in Nigeria’s justice system.
The summit was attended by dignitaries including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, NBA President Yakubu Maikyau, and Court of Appeal President Justice Monica Dongbam-Mendez, as well as Heads of Superior Courts.
The agenda of the summit includes discussions on strategies for expediting case adjudication and easing the burden on the Supreme Court. Over the next two days, participants will deliberate on various issues affecting the judiciary and explore avenues for fostering socio-economic development through justice reform.
