Rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has voiced his criticism regarding the six-month sentence handed to Bobrisky for Naira mutilation, advocating for a different approach to handling victimless crimes like currency mutilation.
Adeyanju’s statement, released amidst growing public debate over the severity of Bobrisky’s sentence, underscores the need for security agencies to adopt a community service-based approach for such offenses, particularly considering ongoing efforts to reduce prison congestion in Nigeria.
While acknowledging the importance of upholding the law, Adeyanju questions the appropriateness of the six-month imprisonment term, especially given Bobrisky’s status as a first-time offender. He also notes the social media influencer’s expressed willingness to utilize his platform for public education against Naira mutilation.
In his statement, Adeyanju recommends a shift in focus from strict prosecution to prioritizing comprehensive public sensitization campaigns on the issue before resorting to legal action against offenders.
“We take note of the recent sentencing of Mr. Okuneye Idris Olarewaju (popularly known as Bobrisky) to six months’ imprisonment without the option of a fine for Naira mutilation, as reported in various national media outlets. While we do not endorse any breach or violation of the law, we must express our concerns regarding the severity of Mr. Olarewaju’s sentence, particularly in light of his status as a first-time offender and his expressed commitment to utilizing his platform for public awareness against Naira mutilation.
“In sentencing individuals, we urge our judicial system to consider the cultural context surrounding certain offenses. While Naira mutilation is indeed a criminal offense, it is also a practice deeply rooted in our cultural heritage. Therefore, it is incumbent upon relevant authorities to conduct extensive public education campaigns on the matter before resorting to punitive measures,” Adeyanju’s statement reads.
