NBA President Inaugurates Caretaker Committee For SPIDEL Following Removal Of Executive Committee By NBA-NEC
In a decisive move, the Nigerian Bar Association’s National Executive Council (NBA-NEC) at its recently held meeting in Jos, Nigeria had voted unanimously to remove the leadership of the Section on Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL).
The decision came at the conclusion of the 2024 1st Quarter meeting of the NBA-NEC held in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, with all court cases initiated by the former leadership set to be withdrawn.
The NBA-NEC concluded its resolutions by expressing a vote of confidence in the NBA executive committee, led by President Yakubu Maikyau (SAN). Maikyau had previously raised concerns about unauthorized actions taken by SPIDEL chairman, John Aikpokpo-Martins, leading to the suspension of SPIDEL’s activities pending a meeting on February 1st.
In response to the decision made by the National Executive Council (NEC) on February 29, 2024, to remove the Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL), the NBA President has appointed a caretaker committee to oversee SPIDEL’s affairs.
The announcement, conveyed by NBA Secretary Adesina Adegbite, informed all Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) members and the general public of the changes. Adegbite stated, “Following the removal of the Executive Committee of the NBA Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) by a unanimous resolution of the National Executive Council, on Thursday, 29 February 2024, a Caretaker Committee was appointed comprising Sir Steve Adehi, SAN (Chairman), Yakubu Philemon, SAN (Alternate Chairman), Ben Oji (Secretary), Ronke Adeyemi (Member), and Eva Amadi (Treasurer), to manage the affairs of NBA-SPIDEL.”
“The said Caretaker Committee was inaugurated by the President on Monday, 4 March 2024.”
Adegbite further clarified, “All members of the NBA and the general public are hereby notified that the erstwhile Executive Committee of SPIDEL led by John Aikpokpo-Martins Esq (Chairman) and Ms. Funmi Adeogun (Secretary), and all other members of NBA-SPIDEL constituting the said Executive Committee, no longer have authority to act in that capacity either for themselves, the NBA-SPIDEL or the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).”
The appointment of the caretaker committee signals a significant shift in leadership within SPIDEL, reflecting the NBA’s commitment to upholding organizational integrity and ensuring effective governance within its sections.
