Seplat Energy Appoints Senior Lawyer, Udo Udoma As Chairman
Seplat Energy Plc, a prominent Nigerian energy company listed on both the Nigerian Exchange Limited and the London Stock Exchange, has announced the appointment of Mr. Udoma Udo Udoma as its new Independent Non-Executive Chairman.
The decision to appoint Mr. Udoma follows the retirement of Mr. Basil Omiyi, who has served as Chairman and will officially step down on March 31, 2024.
Mr. Udoma’s appointment, effective April 1, 2024, was unanimously approved by the Board of Directors of Seplat Energy in compliance with the Nigerian Companies and Allied Matters Act (“CAMA”) 2020.
Additionally, Seplat Energy disclosed the appointment of Mr. Bello Rabiu as the new Senior Independent Non-Executive Director, succeeding Dr. Charles Okeahalam, who is set to retire on March 31, 2024.
These appointments align with the Board Succession Forward Plan, as outlined in corporate announcements on April 25, 2023 (RNS: 3575X) and November 1, 2023 (RNS: 0096S), which detailed the planned retirements of Mr. Omiyi and Dr. Okeahalam from the Board.
Seplat Energy emphasized that these appointments underscore the company’s commitment to robust corporate governance practices and the establishment of an independent Board.
Mr. Udoma Udo Udoma, an esteemed lawyer and seasoned board administrator, boasts an impressive professional background. He obtained his B.A. (Law) degree and B.C.L. degree in jurisprudence from St. Catherine’s College, Oxford, England, before being admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1978.
During his legal career, Mr. Udoma specialized in advising on Nigerian investment laws, particularly in the petroleum, energy, and natural resources sectors. He has also served on the boards of various large-sized companies, including UAC Nigeria Plc and Union Bank Plc, and held public sector positions such as Chairman of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and Minister of Budget & National Planning.
Currently, Mr. Udoma serves as the Pro-Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. His wealth of experience and expertise make him a valuable addition to Seplat Energy’s leadership team.
