Senate Mandates Police to Recruit 10 Individuals from Every One of Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas
In a significant development on Thursday, the Nigerian Senate issued a directive to the Police Service Commission and the Nigeria Police Force, mandating them to recruit a minimum of 10 candidates from each of the 774 local government councils across the country. The directive is to be incorporated into their annual recruitment processes, as declared by the Upper Chamber.
The decision to issue this directive came as a result of a motion put forward by Senator Emmanuel Udende Memga, representing Benue North East. Senator Memga emphasized the importance of upholding the Federal Character Principle in the recruitment of constables within the Nigerian Police Force.
The Senate, often referred to as the Upper Chamber, further solidified its stance by instructing the Committees on Police Affairs and Legislative Compliance to oversee and ensure strict adherence to the resolution.
In related proceedings on the same day, a noteworthy bill seeking to establish the National Assembly Budget and Research Office successfully passed its second reading. The bill, championed by Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, aims to equip the National Assembly with an independent, objective, timely, and non-partisan analytical resource. If ultimately approved, this legislative measure is poised to provide crucial insights and analyses necessary for informed economic and budgetary decisions. The development occurred on Thursday, February 29, 2024, marking a significant step forward in Nigeria’s legislative landscape.
