In a solemn yet reflective atmosphere at the High Court of Oyo State, I attended the Valedictory court session in honor of Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN, CON, former Governor of Ondo State and a distinguished President of the Nigerian Bar Association.
In her address, the Chief Judge of Oyo State, Hon. Justice I.S. Yerima, stated of Aketi: “Today we mourn a great man, but we also delight in the cherished memories of our beloved “Aketi “ because we know that his legacy lives on. He lived a great and impactful life, such that he will always be remembered for good”.
In his address, the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN in eulogizing Aketi’s forthrightness and courage, stated: “Akeredolu was a very vocal voice in the respect for the Constitution and adherence to good governance. He always insisted that democracy should be practiced with the people at the Centre of all decisions by the government. His foray into politics, therefore, was a litmus test to know whether critics could deliver on their campaigns. He did not fail that test. By the time it pleased God to have him go ahead of us all last December, his footprints in Ondo State are enough reasons the good people of Ondo State will for a very long time continue to cherish his legacy”
In my tribute penned after his death, I conveyed the profound sorrow felt by many upon hearing of Aketi’s passing, extending heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, the people of Ondo State, and the legal community. Aketi’s life was a testament to brilliance, dedication to truth, and an unwavering commitment to justice. Not only did he excel in the courtroom, but he also tirelessly worked to elevate legal education and uphold ethical standards within the legal profession.
Continuing I noted that as President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Aketi left an indelible mark, advocating for legal reforms, due process, human rights, and unity among legal practitioners. His leadership was characterized by compassion, strength, and a tireless pursuit of justice. Beyond his professional achievements, Aketi was a mentor, confidant, and friend to many, exemplifying good governance and exemplary leadership as Governor of Ondo State.
In this moment of grief, we find solace in the memories shared and the lessons learned from Aketi’s exemplary life. May his legacy inspire us to approach our endeavors with passion, integrity, and compassion, upholding the principles he held dear. Though he may have passed on, the spirit of his wisdom, leadership, and warmth will continue to resonate within our hearts. With shared condolences and a determination to carry forward his legacy, may we find the strength to honor his memory and continue his noble work.
