FG Expresses Regret, Offers Clarification On Oversight In UK-Nigeria Bilateral Legal Practice Agreement

In response to public concerns, the federal government has provided clarifications on the Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership (ETIP) recently signed with the United Kingdom. The clarification comes in the wake of criticism from Nigerians who characterized the agreement as a “one-sided memorandum of understanding (MOU)” with the UK.

On Tuesday, the UK’s Department of Business and Trade released a statement, and Doris Uzoka-Anitie, Nigeria’s minister for trade and investment, posted a tweet announcing the deal. The statement and tweet indicated that the agreement aimed to eliminate obstacles hindering UK lawyers from practicing international law in Nigeria. The federal government seeks to address the public’s concerns and shed light on the specific aspects of the ETIP agreement.
