Court Of Appeal President Establishes Tribunal For Delta And Anambra Rerun Elections

The President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, has taken a significant step by setting up the National and State Houses of Assembly Election Tribunal for the rerun elections conducted in certain constituencies in Delta and Anambra States.

The rerun elections, which took place on Saturday, February 3, 2024, saw the need for a judicial body to address any arising issues. In response, Justice Dongban-Mensem, through a statement dated February 6, 2024, appointed Aminu Abdullahi Ahmad as the Secretary of the Tribunal to oversee its operations.

The constitution of the Tribunal is in line with the powers vested in the President of the Court of Appeal by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2022.

According to Ahmad, the Tribunal will handle matters concerning the rerun elections in Burutu and Ethiope West State Constituencies in Delta State, as well as Nnewi North/Nnewi South/Ekwusigbo and Orumba North and South Federal Constituencies in Anambra State.

In a bid to facilitate accessibility and convenience, the two Tribunals for Delta and Anambra will convene in Asaba, Delta State. The Chief Judge of Delta State, Hon. Justice Theresa Diai, has generously provided a courtroom at the High Court Complex on Okpanam Road, Asaba, as the venue for the Tribunal’s proceedings.

The Tribunal’s registry and secretariat have been opened to the public for inquiries, ensuring transparency and accountability in the electoral dispute resolution process.
