Femi Falana, Musician Falz, Senior Lawyers, Activists Celebrate Conferment Of SAN On Funmi Falana
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, his son and musician, Folarin Falana, senior lawyers and human rights activists gathered in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on Monday to celebrate the conferment of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) on Mrs Funmi Falana, the wife of the fiery lawyer.
The SAN, which is the highest legal honour in the country, was conferred on Funmi Falana and 57 other lawyers at an elaborate ceremony at the Supreme Court, after which the Falanas held a reception at the Reiz Continental Hotel, Abuja.
Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, among other family friends of the Falanas was also at the occasion.
The event was attended by senior lawyers, a judge and an array of human rights activists.
The Legal Practitioner’s Privileges Committee released the first shortlist of candidates who applied for the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria on the 14th of September, 2023.
Among the names on the 69-man shortlist were; Funmi Falana, Folashade Abosede Alli, Abiola Isiaq Oyebanji, Bomo Olakunle Agbebi, Daniel Osinach Uruakpa, Felix Ota Offia, Lawrence Bankole Falade, and Kingsley Osabuohein Obamogie.
The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) had by this notice announced the shortlisting of Applicants who qualified after the Advocates 1st and 2nd Filtration Stages, Academic pre-qualification, Academic 2nd filtration Exercise, the Independent Appeals Hearing and Chambers Inspection Exercise, preparatory to the interview stage in the process for the conferment of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria on the successful Applicants for the year 2023.
Also on October 12, the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee finally approved the elevation of 58 lawyers to the rank of Senior Advocates of Nigeria.
The Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary of the LPPC, Ms. Hajo Bello, had made this known in a statement, saying the LPPC approved the elevation of the 58 at its 159th plenary session.
In attendance was the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, who also doubled as the body’s chairman.
Bello further revealed that during the meeting, the committee, after giving consideration, dismissed four petitions that were written against some of the applicants.
She had said, “The swearing-in ceremony of the 58 successful applicants is scheduled to take place on Monday, the 27th day of November 2023.”
The full list includes the following: “Funmi Falana, Felix Offia, Lawrence Falade, Kingsley Obamogie, Folashade Alli, Abiola Oyebanji, Bomo Agbebi, Daniel Uruakpa, Oseloka Osuigwe, Babatunde Adeoye, Babaseyi Joseph, Emmanuel Enoidem, Kehinde Aina, Ngozi Olehi, Aaron Okoroma, Ibrahim Angulu, Olayiwola Afolabi, Sule Shu’aibu, Abiodun Olaleru, Kazeem Sobaloju and Shehu Abdullahi.
Others are: “Fidelis Mbadugha, Onyemaechi Adikwu, Ikechukwu Onuoma, Yakubu Philemon, Johnny Agim, Aliyu Ibrahim, Isaiah Bozimo, Prisca Ozoilesike, Hahaha Santana, Adedayo Adedeji, Adeola Adedipe, Chikaosolu Ojukwu, Musa Attah, Ayotunde Ogunleye, Olayemi Badewole and Babatunde Adetunji, Alfred Atteh.
