Yoruba Nation Agitator, Sunday Igboho Released From Prison
Yoruba nation advocate, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has regained his freedom after more than two years of imprisonment in the Republic of Benin.
A video clip circulated on social media platforms on Sunday, showing Adeyemo announcing his release and expressing gratitude to his supporters.
In his words, “I am now free to return to Nigeria and visit any country in the world.”
He also confirmed his legal compliance with bail conditions set a few years ago, allowing him to return to Nigeria, and will be able to return to the country any moment.
“I have fulfilled all the legal conditions attached to my bail a few years back and I am coming home to Nigeria, my country of origin, any moment from now.
“I can confirm to you that I am now free to come back to Nigeria. There is no legal encumbrance again,” he added.
Adeyemo, dressed in white, was seen in the video, seated on a plastic chair as he read a prepared speech.
He expressed his gratitude to Yoruba people worldwide for their support and specifically acknowledged key figures in the Yoruba nation movement, including Banji Akintoye, Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, and former President Olusegun Obasanjo, for their roles in securing his release.
He also extended his thanks for the sympathies he received following the passing of his mother during his imprisonment, revealing that her body was still in the morgue, awaiting his return for a proper burial.
Adeyemo first gained prominence in January 2021 when he issued a seven-day ultimatum to Fulani residents in Igangan, Oyo State, to leave the area, citing alleged kidnappings linked to Fulani herders.
Subsequently, he led a mob in burning down the house of the Seriki Fulani of Oyo State, Saliu Abdulkadri.
His actions drew the attention of the State Security Service (SSS), as he intensified his campaigns against alleged kidnapping by herders in South-west states and his advocacy for the Yoruba nation.
He argued that this was the only way to secure Yoruba people from attacks and address their perceived marginalization within Nigeria.
The SSS declared Sunday Igboho wanted, and on July 1, 2021, his house in Soka, Ibadan, was raided by SSS operatives, leading to the alleged discovery of firearms and other weapons.
During the raid, his vehicles, including a G-Wagon and Prado Jeep, were damaged, and valuable property, including furniture and windows, were destroyed.
Adeyemo is currently in Germany as confirmed by his lawyer, Yomi Aliu, to TheCable.
“Yes, he has been released. He was released yesterday. He is now in Germany,” Aliu stated.
