INEC Moves To Prosecute 215 Electoral Offenders

The Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) says it has received 215 Case Files from the Nigerian Police Force following conclusion of investigation into electoral offenses arising from the 2023 General Election.
INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu stated this in Abuja during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners from the 36 states and the FCT.
Professor Yakubu said the commission was considering all the evidences of infractions during the election including the prosecution of offenders and activities of all actors including high ranking officials.
According to the INEC Boss, the commission is working with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, (ICPC) on the prosecution of cases relating to vote buying and associated violations.
He said the Commission commenced reviewing of the 2023 general election with State Resident Electoral Commissioners because of their critical roles in the conduct of the polls.
Professor Yakubu noted that the commission had received reports from 54 accredited national and International observers and pledged to give equal prominence to all reports.
According to him, the Commission will review the reports to ensure that necessary lessons are learnt from their conclusions and recommendations.
He stressed that the Commission would continue to count on the support of stakeholders to improve the nation’s electoral process.
Professor Yakubu lauded the contributions of State Resident Electoral Commissioners towards the successful conduct of the last general election.
Professor Yakubu said the commission was preparing for three off cycle governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi States scheduled for 11th November 2023.
