Egypt Carries Out Death Sentence On Man For Killing Love Interest

Egyptian prison authorities on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, executed a man sentenced to death for the premeditated murder of his fellow student who turned down his advances.

In a case that sparked national outrage in Egypt, Mohamed Adel was found guilty last year for the premeditated murder of fellow student Nayera Ashraf after he confessed to the crime in court.

Adel was sentenced in a highly publicized two-day hearing in June last year, after a video of Ashraf being attacked and stabbed to death outside her university in Mansoura, 150 kilometers (95 miles) north of Cairo, went viral.

She had previously expressed her worries about an attack to authorities, and prosecutors said messages from the accused “threatening to cut her throat” were discovered on her phone.

Some social media users urged the culprits to be executed, while others said males should “learn to take no for an answer.”

According to Amnesty International, in Egypt where murder is a capital offense, the world’s fourth-highest number of executions were carried out last year.

According to a 2015 United Nations poll, nearly eight million Egyptian women were victims of violence committed by their partners or relatives, or by strangers in public places.
