NBA-AGC 2023: Maikyau Urges Lawyers To “Take The Lead” As Conference Theme, Logo, Portal Are Unveiled

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has unveiled its 2023 Annual General Conference (AGC) theme, logo and registration portal.

The unveiling which was held on Monday at the association’s National Secretariat in Abuja was organised by the Technical Committee on Conference Planning (TCCP) led by its Chairman, Afam Osigwe SAN.

Speaking on the theme of the conference, “Getting It Right: Charting the course for Nigeria’s Nation Building”, President of the NBA, Yakubu Maikyau SAN said that it is the responsibility of Lawyers to lead the nation. “No one else can do it for the country of Nigeria. No other profession is positioned to take the lead in the recovery, reformation and repositioning of this country except the legal profession and the earlier we take on that responsibility, the better for all of us” he said.

“That is why this year we are going to examine the nation as a whole. Why is it that in every facet of our national life, we encounter challenges when it comes to dealing with issues here in the country but of course we hear stories of how Nigerians in the medical, aviation, engineering, business and other professions, excel outside our shores.”

“We heard that in the fifties, even Saudi Arabia came to Nigeria for excursions. What is happening in this country? Why is it that we step outside the shores of this county and we are the best but we come back and we are brought down by the challenges, not of course for the lack of human or natural resources. But there is something we are not doing right”.

He continued: “That is why the NBA must take the lead for Nigeria to get it right. We are blessed with all the potentials that we need to get it right but whatever it is that has brought us down as a nation, it is for us to fight it, discover it and take the lead in providing leadership and direction for the good of this country. “We have to build the nation Nigeria. It has to recover, be repositioned and be reformed such that we find our rightful place in the committee of nations.

“The logo depicts the revolution that is going to happen in this country and with that tick just assuring Nigerians that we are going to get it right this time” he said.

Listing some innovations and concessions for this year’s conference, Chairman of the TCCP, Afam Osigwe said concessions and consideration were given to lawyers between zero to ten years post call, Lawyers with disabilities and septuagenarian lawyers and older. “There will also be helplines to resolve registration and conference queries” he said.

The 2023 edition of the Annual General conference of the NBA will take place from August 25th to September 1st at the M.K.O Abiola stadium in Abuja.
