The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has so far embarked on no fewer than 50 months industrial action since 1999, says Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The LP candidate, while campaigning in Jalingo, Taraba state, yesterday, promised that such paralysis of academic activities would be history, if given the mandate to pilot the affairs of the country next year.
His words: “The 50 months ASUU strike in Nigeria is a setback for both the development of Nigeria and its educational system.
“What Datti and I want to do for Nigeria is to ensure that we move from consumption to production and there would be no more ASUU strike.”
He also vowed to make Taraba an economic hub and tourist attraction through the numerous untapped natural resources.
“The untapped mineral resources here and the Mambilla hydro is enough to transform the economy of the country and create job opportunities for Nigerian youths,” he added.
The LP candidate, who was of the view that insecurity was persisting in the country due to lack of job opportunities, reiterated his commitment to bring Nigeria to her days of greatness and make the citizens smile again.
Aligning his weight to that of the presidential candidate, LP gubernatorial candidate for the state, Joel Ikenya, urged Tarabans to put aside sentiment by queuing en masse behind Obi, who he described as a true reflection of democracy.
Ikenya beckoned the people to eschew acts that would likely frustrate free, fair and credible elections.
