Magistrate Transfer: Nasarawa JSC Threatens Legal Consequences

The Nasarawa State Judicial Service Commission has reacted to a threat by an aide of the State commissioner of works, to mete out what he termed “special punishment” on a Magistrate who issued a bench warrant against the commissioner.
The state commissioner of works, Idris Mohammed Idris and his aide Aliyu Bello Aliyu had since plunged into controversy following the bench warrant made by Magistrate, Aisha Abdullah. Reacting to the warrant, Mr Aliyu, an aide to the Commissioner threatened that the Magistrate would be meted with “special punishment”.
A few days afterAliyu’s statement, the Magistrate was transferred.
The Nasarawa Judicial Service Commission has since reacted to the events. A letter sighted by TheMetroLawyer, and signed by its Executive Secretary, Yahaya Yakubu Shafa on behalf of the Chief Judge, the Commission expressed extreme dismay at Aliyu’s statement.
The statement read in part; “The Nasarawa State Judiciary enjoys independence and cannot allow anybody, bully any of its officials, no matter how highly placed.
It added, “You are by this letter given 48hours to publicly withdraw the said statement, issue an unreserved apology to the Magistrate and the Nasarawa State judiciary or we shall proceed against you for criminal intimidation and other charges.”
