NBA Nnewi Branch Law Week, 2022: Goodwill Message From Y.C. Maikyau, SAN, FCIArb(UK), FICMC

I am delighted to be invited by the branch to join in participating in her Law Week being held on 23rd – 25th June, 2022. I extol the leadership of the branch ably led by Kingsley P Awuka Esq for the choice of the theme “Role of the Judiciary in Strengthening Democratic and Electoral Principles in Nigeria”.
The Judiciary hold a unique position among democratic institutions such that they represent one of our last bastions of participatory democracy in which disputants go directly before a judge. In no other governmental connect does an individual have the opportunity to take a problem to a decision maker who represents the full force and power as an organ of government. This direct interchange between the electorates and the state is the heart of true democratic process. We must protect this unique heritage and strive to preserve the values it represents. In every democratic state in the world, election is regarded as the heart of liberal democracy. Elections are seen as the hallmark of democracy because it gives an avenue for peaceful change of government and legitimises the new administration. The Judiciary being the hope of common man must continue to play an active role in our electoral system so as to ensure that justice is not subverted and also continue to maintain the balance in the interest of justice between conflicting interests.
I commend the Chairman of the Branch, the Executives and the Law Week Planning Committee on the smooth planning and consequent execution of this laudable event. I encourage all participants to enrich their legal knowledge by this event and use same in the furtherance of a better society where rule of law reigns supreme. Finally, I wish all participants successful deliberations.
Long live NBA, Nnewi Branch,
Long live the NBA,
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
