Maikyau, SAN Pens Heartfelt Commendation Message To Supporters Following ECNBA Dismissal Of Petitions Against Him [ECNBA Responses To Petitions Attached]

The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Welfare Committee and NBA Presidential hopeful, Mr Y.C. Maikyau, SAN has commended the maturity, thoughtfulness and grace which his teeming supporters have employed in handling the matters which were meant to provoke and distract his ambition.

Recall that recently, the amiable Silk’s aspiration to the top seat of the Nigerian Bar Association came under attack, when some petitions were made challenging his eligibility to run for President of the NBA.

One of the petitions, brought by one Tochukwu Ohazuruike, which alleged that Y.C Maikyau, SAN did not meet the constitutional requirements of the Nigerian Bar Association NEC membership for 2 years to vie for the office of President, Nigerian Bar Association was dismissed on the basis that NEC is the only body that could make a pronouncement as to whether the Learned Silk had ceased to be a NEC member. The ECNBA also found that there was no satisfactory evidence furnished by the petitioner to show that Mr Maikyau S.A.N. was not a financial member of the NBA Abuja Branch. The ECNBA also also declined jurisdiction over the petition furnished by one Kayode Bello against Mr Maikyau S.A.N. and therefore dismissed his failed petition.

As it stands, the ECNBA has cleared Y. C. Maikyau to pursue his ambition to become the next President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), prompting the revered learned Silk to extend his appreciation to his supporters in the following post.

My Dear Learned Silks, Seniors & Distinguished Colleagues.

In the last few weeks, our collective aspiration to step out and serve the Bar came under attack. Our resolve to offer purposeful leadership driven by honour, integrity and high standard of professionalism, for the common good of our Association and the country was assailed by the series of petitions we had to contend with.

While we recognise the right of the petitioners to make allegations as they imagined they could, it was left for them to substantiate/establish their claims. In the course of waiting for the decision of the ECNBA on the said petitions, I noticed that you, my friends, remained resolute and focused; while stones and muds were slung at us, you kept calm and refused to be distracted. I commend your maturity, thoughtfulness and gracefulness in handling the matters which were meant to provoke and distract us. We had always known our detractors will, as is their custom, deploy their antics, but you were unwavering in your commitment. As it turned out, we were attacked on every side, yet we refused to be distressed; we may have been momentarily perplexed, but definitely did not despair.

I am filled with profound gratitude to God Almighty for your resilience, support, confidence and belief in our dream.

This is to appreciate you all for your courage and unrelenting devotion to the cause. By the grace of God we remain unstoppable; we shall arrive at our destination where we will unleash our God-given talents and potentials to take the lead in the recovery, reformation and repositioning of the Bar and indeed our nation Nigeria.

Have a wonderful weekend.
Yakubu Chonoko (YC) Maikyau
